Oscar winner Anne Hathaway is in talks to star in the political thriller "The Last Thing He Wanted" based on the book of the same name written by Joan Didion. The film will be directed by Dee Rees ("Mudbound") from a script written by Marco Villalobos, and produced by Cassian Elwes ("Dallas Buyers Club"), Marc Godfrey ("Silence") and Robert Jones ("The Usual Suspects").

Hathaway would star as Elena McMahon, a woman who finds herself on dangerous ground as the Iran Contra Affair's arms for drugs plot reaches its tipping point. The producers describe the film as the "thrilling story of one woman, alone and unrelenting in a race against time". The film is currently in pre-production.

Hathaway can also be seen this year in the upcoming "Ocean's 8" (June 8), the drama "Serenity" (September 28) alongside Matthew McConaughey, and the comedy "The Hustle" (June 29).
