While last week's semi-bomb "Blade Runner 2049" took a steep dive over the weekend, new arrival "Happy Death Day" pulled off a surprising box-office debut. Another new release, the action thriller "The Foreigner" also managed an impressive feat.

Jason Blum scores yet another victory at the box-office, as his latest production, the horror film "Happy Death Day" topped the charts with an impressive $26.5 million versus a $4.8 million budget. And with Halloween fast-approaching, this one will easily surpass $50 million in the next few weeks. The film received a mixed-to-positive reception from critics (64 on Rotten Tomatoes and 57 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports a "B" grade from their opening day polls.
In second place we have last week's #1 film, the sci-fi sequel "Blade Runner 2049", which after a disappointing debut has now dropped a steep 54%, grossing $15.1 million and raising its domestic sum to $60.5 million. That doesn't sound very impressive when looking at its $150 million budget. However, overseas the film has managed to rake in $98 million, which might sweeten the blow somewhat, and perhaps keep hope alive for another sequel. It's also worth mentioning that the film has yet to open in China, which could prove to be a major market for the film.
At #3 we have another new arrival, the action thriller "The Foreigner" from director Martin Campbell, who has resurrected the James Bond franchise twice, once in 1995 with "GoldenEye" starring Pierce Brosnan, and again in 2006 with "Casino Royale" starring Daniel Craig. This new film reunites the director with Brosnan and stars Jackie Chan in a rare out-of-character performance. The film opened with $12.8 million, surpassing early projections that predicted a $10 million debut. And internationally it is already a big hit, grossing $88.4 million since its release on September 30th, of which $66 million were contributed by China. The film only cost $35 million to produce. "The Foreigner" received mixed reviews from critics (57% on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports a strong "A-" grade.
The Stephen King adaptation "It" drops to #4 with $6 million, bringing its domestic cume to $314.9 million, and it also managed to cross the $300 million milestone overseas as well. The film has now become the ninth largest worldwide release of 2017.
The Top 5 is rounded up by "The Mountain Between Us" with $5.6 million. The film has grossed $20.5 million in the U.S. and $9.7 million internationally.
Another new release, the biopic "Marshall" almost made it in the Top 10 with $3 million from 821 theaters, but was overtaken by the period drama "Victoria and Abdul", for which this will most likely be the last week it spends among the first ten films at the box-office.
The biggest disappointment comes from the highly acclaimed biopic "Professor Marston & the Wonder Women", which chronicles the true story behind the creation of iconic character Wonder Woman. The film opened with a very weak $737,000 from 1,229 theaters, despite enjoying a considerable amount of hype after receiving enthusiastic reviews at the Toronto Film Festival.
