Newcomer "War for the Planet of the Apes" had no trouble taking down "Spider-Man: Homecoming" at the box-office, but its opening weekend wasn't as spectacular as anticipated. Meanwhile, the new horror film "Wish Upon" had a pretty terrible first weekend.

Although studio projections for "War for the Planet of the Apes" were pretty reserved, the film did managed to open slightly better than expected with $56.5 million, enough to secure the top spot, but a drop from "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" ($72 million). The first film in the reboot trilogy, "Rise of..." opened in 2011 with $54.8 million. So it's not really a dream scenario for the film, especially since it's being hailed as the best of the trilogy and hopes were high. Internationally, the film raked in another $46 million, so that brings it closer to breaking even against its $150 million budget. The film received an "A-" from CinemaScore, and had generally positive reviews from critics (95% on Rotten Tomatoes and 83 on Metacritic).
In second place, "Spider-Man: Homecoming" took a pretty steep 61% drop in its second weekend, grossing $45.2 million for a grand domestic total of $208.2 million. Its international cume has now reached $261.1 million, so that puts the film in a pretty comfortable position, so far, with a few more overseas markets left to open in the following weeks, including the big one, China.
"Despicable Me 3" is down to three, as the film grossed $18.9 million. Its domestic tally is currently $187.9 million and overseas it's doing a lot better with a total of $431.4 million. Expect another sequel.
At #4 we have "Baby Driver", which continues to do well, dropping just 33% and grossing $8.7 million. The film has grossed $73.1 million domestically and another $23.1 million overseas.
The Top 5 is rounded up by an unexpected hit, the Amazon Studios romantic comedy "The Big Sick", which expanded nationwide and climbed to #5 with $7.6 million and a $16 million total. A pretty impressive feat for the former limited release.
The other new wide release, the horror film "Wish Upon" made an unimpressive debut, opening in seventh place with $5.5 million. The film had a small $12 million budget, but with only a "C-" from CinemaScore and very bad reviews (20% on Rotten Tomatoes and 30 on Metacritic), it really doesn't look like it can count on word of mouth to help it stay in the Top 10 next week.
