This week in theaters, Tom Cruise goes back to another action franchise with "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back". That title is very good advice that nobody seems to have listened to. Next, there's the horror sequel "Ouija: Origin of Evil" that managed to shock everyone. In a good way, too. Those looking for a laugh or two can check out the all-star comedy "Keeping Up With the Joneses" or Tyler Perry's "Boo! A Madea Halloween". I ain't kidding. You'll only laugh once or twice on either one of these movies.

Synopses, details, critical reception, trailers, clips and more after the jump.

JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK

Official Synopsis

Tom Cruise returns as Jack Reacher in this sequel based on Lee Child's bestselling novel Never Go Back, which finds the itinerant problem-solver accused of murder, and learning that he may have a child he has never met.

Film Details

  • Starring: Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Patrick Heusinger, Aldis Hodge, Danika Yarosh, Holt McCallany, Robert Knepper

  • Director: Edward Zwick

  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Crime

  • Running Time: 118 min.

  • Rating: PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, some bloody images, language and thematic elements

Critical Reception

  • Rottentomatoes: 38% (45 fresh, 72 rotten, score: 5.2/10)
  • Metacritic: 47 out of 100 (8 positive, 23 mixed, 7 negative).

"Jack Reacher" isn't exactly a huge franchise, and the modest momentum of the first film is squandered in this lackluster sequel that checks every genre cliche and even Tom Cruise's bonafide action star charisma can't keep this one afloat. Fans of the first film should give it a try, but it's not a guaranteed fit for everyone else.

OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL

Official Synopsis

It was never just a game. Inviting audiences again into the lore of the spirit board, Ouija: Origin of Evil tells a terrifying new tale as the follow-up to 2014’s sleeper hit that opened at number one. In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

Ouija: Origin of Evil is produced by Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Purge series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (The Purge and Insidious series), alongside Hasbro’s Brian Goldner (Transformers and G.I. Joe series) and Stephen Davis (Ouija). Mike Flanagan directs from a screenplay he wrote with his Oculus and Before I Wake collaborator, Jeff Howard, and Universal will distribute the film worldwide.

  • Director: Mike Flanagan

  • Genre: Horror, Thriller

  • Running Time: 99 min.

  • Rottentomatoes: 78% (46 fresh, 13 rotten, score: 6.0/10)
  • Metacritic: 65 out of 100 (16 positive, 8 mixed, 0 negative).

Who would have thought that the best reviewed film of the week would be a sequel to one of 2014's worst films. "Ouija: Origin of Evil" is a much more effective horror film featuring a solid cast and the assured direction of "Oculus" helmer Mike Flanagan. It's as good as Halloween horror films can get.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES

Film Details

  • Starring: Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot, Patton Oswalt, Maribeth Monroe, Kevin Dunn, Matt Walsh

  • Director: Greg Mottola

  • Genre: Action, Comedy

  • Rottentomatoes: 17% (11 fresh, 55 rotten, score: 4.5/10)
  • Metacritic: 35 out of 100 (2 positive, 14 mixed, 11 negative).

"Keeping Up With the Joneses" is the typical mediocre comedy with a terrible script that completely wastes a hugely talented cast. It may not be the worst of the year, but it's certainly nothing you'll remember the next day.
