MAN OF STEEL and THE PURGE Sequels Announced

Man of Steel movie Poster The Purge Movie Poster

It's sequel time ! Whenever a movie scores big at the box-office, it's a given that the studio is contemplating a sequel. Such is the case with the dystopian home-invasion horror "The Purge" starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. The film cost only $3M to make, but grossed over $36M in its opening weekend, so it's no surprise that it only took Universal two days to announce that "The Purge 2" is in development. The film was produced by Jason Blum, a man who is known in Hollywood for his ability to turn ultra-low budget flicks into big hits. His portfolio includes "Paranormal Activity", "Insidious" and "Sinister". The latter also starred Ethan Hawke. It is unknown if director James De Monaco will return to work on the sequel.

The other sequel announced today has nothing to with box-office returns. Not yet, anyway. In the case of "Man of Steel", the Superman reboot directed by Zack Snyder ("Watchmen") and produced by Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight" trilogy), the sequel decision is based on the very positive early reviews and strong buzz, which all seem to indicate an inevitable box-office hit when the movie hits theaters this Friday. Rumors indicate that both director Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer will return for the sequel. Nolan will probably produce the next film and he is involved in the development of the "Justice League" movie, which is said to focus on the rebooted Superman character.
