Trailer for ROMEO & JULIET Starring Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth

Romeo and Juliet 2013

A trailer has been released for the new adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet". The screenplay is adapted by "Downton Abbey" creator/writer Julian Fellowes and it's directed by Carlo Carlei. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit") as Juliet, Douglas Booth ("The Pillars of the Earth") as Romeo, Paul Giamatti, Stellan Skarsgard, Damian Lewis, Ed Westwick, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Natascha McElhone.

Those worried that the film will be yet another modern take on the story like Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet", should rest easy. This is as classical as it can get, complete with all the period details you can expect. Still, the problem with these adaptations is that unless they get radical, like Luhrmann in 1996, the risk is that the story will be told in a much too conformist manner, which is the perfect way to suppress excitement. In short, this could end up an average achievement among some already great adaptations, particularly Franco Zeffirelli's classic. "Romeo & Juliet" opens on July 26, 2013 in the UK. No US release date, yet.

Watch the trailer after the jump.
