CASTING NEWS: Tom Hiddleston, Tom Cruise, Cillian Murphy, Julianne Moore, John Cusack

    Tom Hiddleston Picture
  • Actor Tom Hiddleston ("The Avengers", "Thor") is in early talks to star as protagonist Eric Draven in the troubled "The Crow" remake, which is based on the 1994 cult classic directed by Alex Proyas and James O’Barr's comics. Several directors and lead actors have been joining, then dropping out of this remake, but for some time things seem solid on the filmmakers' part. The film will be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez ("Before the Fall") and the script is penned by Cliff Dorfman ("Warrior"). If negotiation go well with Hiddleston, they may have the lead secured as well.

  • Tom Cruise Picture Tom Cruise is growing a sweet tooth for science fiction. Besides already starring in Joseph Kosinski's "Oblivion" and finishing work on Doug Liman's "All You Need is Kill", Cruise has now joined the cast of Warner Bros. "Yukikaze", an adaptation of Chohei Kambayashi's sci-fi novel. The story takes place on a war-ravaged Earth where a hyper-dimensional gateway opened up over Antarctica sets the stage for a battle between humans and aliens. The protagonist, who will be played by Cruise, is sent on the alien planet Fairy to gather information that can put an end to the war. No director or writer have been hired, yet.

  • Cillian Murphy ("28 Days Later", "Inception") has joined the cast of "Transcendence", the sci-fi thriller which marks the directorial debut of "The Dark Knight" cinematographer Wally Pfister. The film also stars Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany and Kate Mara. The film will open on April 25, 2014.

  • Splinter Ninja Turtles And now, a new casting update for the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot. The role of Splinter, the turtles' mentor, has been cast and will be played by Danny Woodburn ("Seinfeld", "Mirror Mirror"). The turtles will be played by Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard and Noel Fisher, and fearless reporter April O'Neil will be played by Megan Fox. The cast is rounded up by Will Arnett, who plays an unspecified role. "Ninja Turtles" is directed by Joseph Liebesman ("Battle: Los Angeles") and produced by Michael Bay.

  • Julianne Moore and John Cusack will star in David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars". The film is supposed to be a "ghost story that offers a critique of celebrity-obsessed society in Los Angeles", which in Cronenberg's hands can become something very twisted, no doubt. The cast also features Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon.
