NEWS UPDATE: Star Trek 2 Synopsis, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Cate Blanchett as Evil Stepmother

The official synopsis for the "Star Trek" sequel has been released. "Star Trek Into Darkness" is directed by J.J. Abrams ("Lost", "Super 8") and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke and Benedict Cumberbatch. The film will be released on May 17, 2013 in 3D and IMAX 3D. Here is the synopsis:
"In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew."

Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are set to join "X-Men: Days of Future Past", the sequel to last year's "X-Men: First Class", as Professor Xavier and Magneto. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult will reprise their roles from the prequel. "Days of Future Past" will be directed by Bryan Singer ("X-Men", "X2") and is expected to borrow the story arc of the comic book with the same title, which takes place in 2013 and features a dystopian future inhabited by Sentinels.

Cate Blanchett is in negotiations to star as the evil stepmother in Disney's new "Cinderella" project directed by Mark Romanek ("One Hour Photo", "Never Let Me Go"). The script for the film was written by Aline Brosh McKenna ("The Devil Wears Prada") and rewriten by Chris Weitz ("About a Boy"). Amanda Seyfried is rumored to be in the running for the title role.
