NEWS UPDATE: Planet of the Apes, Man of Steel, Daniel Radcliffe and Seth MacFarlane

Director Matt Reeves ("Cloverfield", "Let Me In") will direct "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", the sequel to last year's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". The first film's director Rupert Wyatt left the sequel due to concerns that he might not be able to meet the 2014 release date the studio had scheduled. The release date has been set for May 23, 2014.

man of steel teaser poster"The Dark Knight" writer David S. Goyer spoke recently about the new Superman film, Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel". Goyer stated that the new approach will be one similar to that of Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins". The exact word he used it "naturalistic". In fact, Nolan is producing this one, so it's easy to think of a Dark Knight approach here. Here is a sample of Goyer's interview:
"What Christopher Nolan and I have done with Superman is try to bring the same naturalistic approach that we adopted for the Batman trilogy. We always had a naturalistic approach, we want our stories to be rooted in reality, like they could happen in the same world we live in. It’s not that easy with Superman, and actually this doesn’t necessarily mean we will make a dark movie. But working on this reboot we are thinking about what would happen if a story like this one actually happened. How would people react to this? What impact would the presence of Superman in the real world have? What I really like to do is write ‘genre’ stories without a cartoonish element. I did the same with Da Vinci’s Demons, and I’ll do the same with Man of Steel."

Daniel Radcliffe stars in a supernatural thriller from director Alexandre Aja ("The Hills Have Eyes"). The film is called "Horns" and follows Ig Perrish (Radcliffe), a young man who wakes up to find himself accused of the rape and murder of his girlfriend. And if that's not bad enough, he's also grown a pair of horns on his head that give him the power of forcing people to confess their sins and give in to their darkest impulses. Perrish now embarks on a quest for revenge to discover the true circumstances of his girlfriend's death and punish the guilty. "Horns" also stars Juno Temple, Max Minghella and James Remar. And as a bonus, here's an official image for the film.

Seth MacFarlane ("Ted", "Family Guy") will host next year's Oscars. The 85th Annual Academy Awards will be aired on February 24, 2013. Here is a video MacFarlane made about the big news and an official press release :

"Seth MacFarlane will host “The 85th Annual Academy Awards®,” telecast producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today. This will be MacFarlane’s first appearance on Oscar’s stage. “The 85th Annual Academy Awards” will be broadcast live on Oscar® SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2013 on the ABC Television Network.

“We are thrilled to have Seth MacFarlane host the Oscars. His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh,” said Zadan and Meron. “He will be the consummate host, and we are so happy to be working with him.”

“It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars,” said MacFarlane. “My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen roast.”

“Seth is unbelievably talented,” said Academy President Hawk Koch. “We couldn’t be happier with the creative team we’ve assembled. With Craig, Neil and now Seth, we’re off to a great start.”

MacFarlane made his feature directorial debut this summer with the box office success “Ted.” He also co-wrote and produced the film, and voiced the title character. “Ted” has brought in over $420 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

MacFarlane is the creative force behind the television series “Family Guy” and co-creator of “American Dad!” and “The Cleveland Show.” In September he hosted “Saturday Night Live” for the first time, for the show’s 38th season premiere. An accomplished live performer, he has played to sold-out audiences at London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall. In 2011 MacFarlane released his debut album, “Music Is Better than Words,” which earned two Grammy® nominations. He also has earned 13 Emmy® nominations and won two for his work on “Family Guy.”

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®. Don Mischer will direct the telecast for the third consecutive time. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide."
