NEWS UPDATE : Jack Ryan Movie, Paranoia, Lincoln Lawyer 2 and Robocop Remake

In case you hadn't heard, there's a new Jack Ryan movie on the way. In case you have no idea who Jack Ryan is, he's a fictional character created by Tom Clancy and featured in many of his novels, some of which have been adapted for the big screen. Ryan has been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck in adaptations such as "The Hunt for Red October", "Patriot Games", "Clear and Present Danger" and "The Sum of All Fears", respectively. For years, Paramount has been struggling to give audiences a new Jack Ryan movie and so it came that when Chris Pine came aboard to play Ryan, the project seemed to move forward. Some dissension over whether or not the movie should be an all-out action movie or a talky espionage movie hindered the evolution of the project, but when writer David Koepp ("Spider-Man", "Secret Window") was brought onboard everything went back on track. Furthermore, veteran actor/director Kenneth Branagh will direct and star as the villain. In a recent interview, Branagh talked about the movie, which will probably begin filming in September :
"Jack Ryan is a very fast-paced, very contemporary, very action-driven thriller. I don’t tend to think of him as a villain, but if you’re playing a villain, you don’t think of him as a villain. You just think, “My guy.” The character is a great anti-thesis, but it isn’t as simple as that. It’s great to see a character in this film with Jack Ryan. It’s just a very strong, very interesting, complicated, complex character. When the project first came my way, it was really to do that. I had a long time to think about that prospect, before actually eventually having them ask me to direct it. And then, we put aside the issue of me being in it for awhile ‘cause there were so many other things to deal with. Literally, months later, Paramount said, “Well, do you think you might?,” and I said, “Yeah, I think I’d like to.”

It’s evolving still, but it’s been a really great process with David Koepp. All the key players are involved. Chris Pine has made tremendous contributions, as has Lorenzo di Bonaventura. He was with the franchise before. My job is guiding all that. I feel very, very happy with the way it’s going. I feel my job is basically to bring all those influences together in a piece that is about something very, very particular, thematically, and people seem happy with that. I think that a lot of exciting elements are finding a place where the film is happily, truly about something. When you get that under something that is also a page-turner and has a high adrenalin factor, I think that’s a nice combination. I have high hopes for the picture."

The high-profile thriller "Paranoia" based on a novel by Joseph Finder has begun filming. The movie, directed by Robert Luketic ("21"), stars Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman, Harrison Ford, Lucas Till, Amber Heard, Embeth Davidtz, Julian McMahon, Josh Holloway and Richard Dreyfuss. The release date is set for September 27, 2013 (US). Here is the movie's official synopsis :
"In this high-stakes thriller, Adam Cassidy (Liam Hemsworth) is an ambitious junior technologist trying to climb the ranks of telecom giant Wyatt Corporation. But after one costly mistake, Adam is blackmailed by ruthless CEO Nicholas Wyatt (Gary Oldman) to turn corporate spy by going to work for the firm’s top competitor, which is run by Wyatt’s old mentor, Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford). Adam soon finds himself delivered into prepackaged success, living his fantasy life of old-world boardrooms, private clubs, exotic cars, and all the spoils of Manhattan bachelorhood. However, behind the scenes, he is merely a pawn in Wyatt’s power play, and must search for a way out from under his boss, who will stop at nothing, even murder, to gain a multi-billion dollar advantage."

Matthew McConaughey has mentioned in a recent interview that work is underway on a sequel for "The Lincoln Lawyer", a movie which successfuly brought McConaughey back on the "serious actor" list. His performance as amoral attorney Mickey Haller in Brad Furman's adaptation of Michael Connelly's novel sparked rave reviews from critics and the box-office response was solid enough to warrant the sequel. Although the actor has not officially signed on for the new movie, he spoke about how the script is still being written and will tie together two of Connelly's books :
"The update is I wish I knew more. The update is I wish I had that second script in my hand already and could have opinions on it and pass on notes. If that next script is [good]—and they are working on it, it’s being written—I would love to get in Mickey Haller’s shoes again. And that’s probably, of all the characters I’ve done, the one I’m most excited about—if it’s good, if the script’s good—of carrying on as a character."

Jackie Earle Haley ("Watchmen", "Little Children") has joined the cast of the "Robocop" remake directed by Jose Padilha ("Elite Squad"), and will play a character named Maddox, who will give Robocop his military training. The movie also stars Joel Kinnaman ("The Killing") as the title character, Gary Oldman ("The Dark Knight Rises") as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson ("The Avengers") as media mogul Pat Novak. Jay Baruchel ("Goon") is reportedly looking to join the cast, but no official announcement has been made. Here is the remake's official synopsis :
"In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before."
